The exhaust system is key element of every motor vehicle. It serves as an outlet that leads the burned out car gases outside the vehicle. That's why its regular maintenance is crucial: first, because it would help you keep your car in a shape; and second, because it will save you time, money and nerves on repair.

But let's first look at the exhaust system's base components. We have a manifold, catalytic converter, middle piping, resonator and muffler. Muffler's main job is to decrease the engine's noise and to lead out the burned gases.

Due to the vehicle's structure, the exhaust system's position contributes to its rapid deterioration over time. The fact that it is situated closer to the ground level enables different elements like mud, water, ice and de-icing chemicals, and not to forget the different road particles, to induce harm.

Corrosion is probably the biggest enemy of the muffler. If you regularly inspect the muffler, over time you will notice small rusty spots on it. Those spots are the first sign of muffler's body deterioration. You might wanna keep a close eye on it and take precaution against the corrosion spread. Most people use garage tricks to "lock" those rusty corrosion spots so that they do not spread further down the exhaust.

The second, most common sign of corrosion is the high level of engine noise coming out of the muffler. As we already said, muffler's task is to decrease the noise so when the cars starts to become noisier than it was before it is time to look beneath and check the exhaust's condition. Usually, when the muffler has a crack or the corrosion is destroying larger parts of the it, noise drastically increases.

In conclusion, exhaust system is an important element of every motor vehicle. Its regular maintenance and inspection would not only extend the life of each of its  mechanical components but will also help you find and treat arising problems. Avoiding road wholes, mud and chemical-treated roads is a sure way to preserve the exhaust and the entire system.
